But this extraordinary turnaround wasn’t just about Ms. Harris. It was also about voters’ immense dissatisfaction with a Biden-Trump rematch, which had brought anxiety and dismay to millions. In an instant, Ms. Harris’s candidacy offered these voters what they had been yearning for: something new, different and more hopeful than that dreaded rematch. It uncorked years of pent-up Democratic enthusiasm. It let Ms. Harris bring the joy back.

The reason we intend to strictly enforce restrictions on campus protests has less to do with pressure from the outside and more to do with what we owe to ourselves as an institution dedicated to discovery, scholarship, teaching and learning. Our central concern is not with reputation — how others see us. It’s with integrity — how we remain faithful to our foundational purpose. What is that purpose? The main clue comes from the word “university,” derived from the Latin “universitas”: the whole, everything, the universe. We are a university not merely in the sense of being a type of corporation that brings together many programs and departments. We are also a university in that each of us is part of the same truth-seeking enterprise — an enterprise that believes in the universality and interconnectedness of knowledge itself. Here at this school, a historian can learn from a geologist, a neurologist can collaborate with a musicologist, and a freshman student can question and challenge the most senior member of the faculty. Here, students with different backgrounds and perspectives can, with a bit of effort, discuss and debate ideas without descending to name-calling, intimidation or ostracism.

Then Mr. Musk arrived with a torrent of posts harshly criticizing Mr. Moraes. Over 17 days in April, Mr. Musk posted about Mr. Moraes more than two dozen times, calling the judge a dictator and comparing him to Darth Vader. Brazilian magazines and newspapers put Mr. Musk and Mr. Moraes on their covers, and the issue was debated in Brazil’s Congress.

The Russians guarding the border posts in Kursk were mostly conscripts, forced to serve as part of Russia’s mobilization, as opposed to the battle-hardened contract soldiers and irregular forces fighting in Ukraine’s east and south. Putting those conscripts at risk poses a political risk for President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia; in Ukraine, Mr. Zelensky has referred to an “exchange fund” that Ukraine has starkly increased.
